Real or Nonsense Word? App
I was doing literacy centres with my students last week. One of the centres had my students using letter tiles to make real and nonsense words. The activity got me wishing that there was an app for this as I was running out letter tiles for each student. Well, I decided to try and create one for my class. And guess what, I did it!! It is a fairly simple app which is what I wanted so it will be easy for me to use and my students to use.
Below are screen shots of the app.
Below are screen shots of the app.
Title Page of the App - This will stay up for a few seconds then will automatically go to the HomePage Menu.
HomePage Menu of the app
HomePage Menu of the app - there are 7 centres/activities in total.
Centre 1 - three letter words (cvc)
Centre 1 - The teacher or student would touch the number 1 and a random letter will appear. Then the teacher or student would touch the number 2 and a random vowel will appear. Then the teacher or student would touch the number 3 and a random letter will appear.
Centre 1 - The teacher or student can record the word on a recording sheet (I have made up recording sheets you can download for free below.) and decide if the word is a real word or a nonsense word. To help the student decide if it is a real word or a nonsense word, I have added a Text to Speech component.
The student would type the word in the text box and press on the listen button right beside the text box.
Once the student has recorded the word on his/her sheet, the student presses on the button under the letters and the letters will disappear and you can start again.
Centre 2 - four letter words (cvvc)
Centre 2 - This centre is just like Centre 1 but for four letters with a CVVC combination.
Centre 3 - three letter words (cvc)
(with "a" as the vowel in the middle)
Centre 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 - These centres are just like Centre 1 but the vowel in the middle will stay the same.
Centre 4 - three letter words (cvc)
(with "e" as the vowel in the middle)
Centre 5 - three letter words (cvc)
(with "i" as the vowel in the middle)
Centre 6 - three letter words (cvc)
(with "o" as the vowel in the middle)
Centre 7 - three letter words (cvc)
(with "u" as the vowel in the middle)
I have Chromecast in my classroom so I am able to cast my tablet so we can do this activity together as a class.
You can purchase this app in the Google Play store at the following link:
You can download the free recording sheets here.
or in my TPT store at:
This would be a great app for any English as a Second Language students.
Enjoy!
