Addition and Subtraction Flip Books

I am always looking for activities to add to my math tubs/centers and I find flip books work really well. I have created nine flip books: 4 addition flip books, 4 subtraction flip books and 1 addition/subtraction flip book.  I have created books with both words and symbols.  The following describes each book:
Flip Books
Two-sided Counters Addition – Give the students 10 two-sided counters in a cup.  Have the students first predict how many yellow and how many red will appear once they spill the counters.  The kids always need to predict first.  Then have them shake the cup and spill the counters.  They colour in their results and write the addition sentence.

Unifix Cubes Addition – Give the students 2 towers of six unifix cubes and one die.  Have the students roll the die once and colour that many unifix in the flip book (they can show on one of their towers too).  Then have them roll a second time and colour in that many unifix in the flip book (they can show that roll on the other tower).  This book as two pictures of unifix towers with six unifix in each.  Then have the students write the addition sentence.

Dice Addition Book #1 – This is a simple one where the student gets 1 die and rolls it twice.  For each roll they record what they rolled on the blank die in the flip book.  Then they write their addition sentence.

Dice Addition Book #2 – Give students a pair of dice and some crayons.  Ask them to roll the dice, find the total and colour in that total.  The object is to colour in the whole card.  First student to fill the card wins.

Ten Apples in a Tree Subtraction – This flip book has a picture of a tree with ten apples.  On each page apples start to fall off the tree and the student has to write the subtraction sentence that matches the picture.  There is a space for students to create their own apple subtraction story.

Frogs on a Log Subtraction – This flip book starts with 10 frogs on a log and on each page frogs start to jump off the log because the log is shrinking.  The student has to write the subtraction sentence.  There is a page for students to create their own frog subtraction story.

Bottle Bowling Subtraction – Have the students set up 10 bottles arranged just like the picture in the flip book (I have also provided a slide with a larger picture of the bottle set up).  Give them a small ball (you could use a foam ball) and have them bowl.  They are to cross out the number of bottles they knocked down in their flip book and write the subtraction sentence.  They set the bottles up again and see if they can knock a different number of bottles down.

Five Little Monkeys – You can read the story to the students first and then show them the flip book.  On each page monkeys jump off the bed and the students have to write the subtraction sentence.  There is a page for students to create their own Little Monkeys subtraction story.

Ten Frame Addition and Subtraction – Have students look at the ten frame and give two addition sentences and two subtraction sentences.

This product is aligned with the following Atlantic Canadian Mathematics Curriculum:
Grade Primary
B1 count the results when small groups are combined
B2 count the results when small groups are separated
Grade One
B1 recognize that addition is used to represent the joining of two groups
B2 recognize that subtraction is used to represent separating situations
B3 recognize the relationship between addition and subtraction

Here are a few pictures of some of the slides from the flip books:
