Mimio Scrambled Sight Word Puzzles
I
started to do sight word puzzles in January with my students every Monday,
Wednesday and Friday during our morning meeting. My students would bring a white board, marker
and eraser down to our meeting area and would record their answers on the white
board. The first set of puzzles I did
were to scramble the sight words I had already introduced. I scrambled six sight words for Monday, six
for Wednesday and six for Friday. I
would show the scrambled word and give the students a few minutes to try to
figure out what sight word it was. They
would then write their “guess” on their recording sheet and then I would show
them the answer to see if they got it right.
I would then move on to the next word
and do the same thing for the next five words. I would give students some hints if I saw
them struggling or point out some letter patters (ie., if you see to ee’s they
may go together). The students really
looked forward to the puzzles and loved the challenge. Once we have done the six words, my students
erase their recording sheets and put them away in their book bins and put away
their markers and erasers and they come back to the meeting area for our word
work chants.
I know everyone does not have a Mimio in their classroom so I am working on making this available in PowerPoint too. It just won't be as interactive but it still can be done and challenge your little ones. This group of students I had this year were some of the best spellers I've ever had and I know it is because of the word work puzzles we did after January. I am excited to see how my students next year will respond to these puzzles. I am definitely going to start them earlier.

Keep coming back to check on my progress of creating this in PowerPoint.
Enjoy!
