1st Full Week Back

Well the first full week of school is over and even though Friday was day 8, it felt like day 58 for my legs!!  

 The first day of school went great!!  A few days before the first day I was looking at other teacher blogs to see what they had done and came across the idea of putting play doh on the student's tables.  I always have something for the students to colour on their desk but I knew I needed something more because parents come in with the students to drop off their supplies and the little ones need something to do while I am putting the bags of supplies in the back and talking with parents about after school procedures.  So I put little plates on each student's desk with a ziplock bag and I put 4 different colours of the Crayola Model Magic which is THE BEST!!!  It doesn't cling to their hands or tables.  Well, it worked!!  As soon as my new students came in, they got straight to work with the Crayola Model Magic.  It was amazing!  It was one of the best first days of school in a long time.  I had the ziplocks on the desk because the Crayola Model Magic and plate went in the ziplock and went home at the end of the day.  I will be using Crayola Model Magic every year now!!

 It is still really busy getting everything organized and I've been really trying to make sure my desk is organized before I leave school but I think all teacher's know that is really hard.  This was my desk on Friday....

Behind my desk is still not the greatest but I was so tired, I had to go home.

 I also needed to find something that I could store my math posters but quickly get them when I needed them.  My solution?

I had 2 of these desk files so I cleaned one out and put my math posters in.  I will be making tags for each section this weekend.  


 One full week down and many more to go!

Plant Journal Revisted with a New Addition Bean Greenhouse Activity

Hello,  I cannot believe I uploaded my plant journal in 2012!!!  I have been using this plant journal with my students for 12 years!!! My students still get excited when they get their journal and investigate their plant growth.   For the past two years I have started the Bean Greenhouses where my students put a few beans in wet cotton balls, place them in a ziploc and we put them on the window and watch them grow.  This year I have created a quick journal for my students to observe their observations.  I always give 3 beans to each student because the ziploc is rather small for any more.  This year my students will be able to get their Bean Greenhouse journal, put down what day it is of growing and then colour in what stage they see their beans. Blank Game Boards

Every year, no matter what grade level I am teaching, I end the year with the students making a game they can play at school and then take it home to play with their family.   And every year it seems I am scrambling to put the materials together for the students.   I have found the younger students really need something concrete they can use.   I came up with these pre-made template.   I made templates without spinners, with different types of spinners and with places for cards.   I have all the templates in a binder in clear plastic protectors and I get the students to pick which template they want the day before we do the activity so I can have the templates ready for the kids.   I also have pre-made squares with various game standards such as “Miss a turn” and Go back 2 spaces” the kids can cut out and glue on the squares they want.   There are also blank squares they can print on to customize their game.   I also give the students a template to help with the writing of their direc

Teacher Week 2013 Classroom Management

Hi everyone,  I have to say, I'm really enjoying this Teacher Week 2013. It's my first time participating in something like this.  Now on to classroom management. All schools in the Halifax Regional School Board uses Positive Effective Behaviour Supports (PEBS).  This is a school-wide system of support that includes proactive strategies for defining, teaching and supporting appropriate student behaviours.  It looks at what our students can do and are doing rather than what they shouldn't do and how we as adults interact with them.  Each student receives a PEBS matrix (a gird) to take home and review with their parents and a PEBS matrix is up in every classroom and teachers routinely refer to the PEBS matrix. We also use Gems with the whole school.  Gems are awarded to students who demonstrate positive behaviours as outlined in the PEBS matrix.  Each class has their own jar into which students deposit gems as they receive them.  Each class decides on a class goal
