Math Calendar and the Mimio

I had purchased my own mimio about 2 years ago on ebay for a great price.  It’s one of the older models but still works the same way as the newer ones it just doesn’t look as pretty.  I wasn’t able to use it as my old classroom didn’t have an LCD that was mounted and the students got really frustrated trying to use it with all the shadows that were happening so I put it away.  This year I moved to a new school and new classroom and an LCD was mounted!!!!  I started using the mimio slowly as I started to learn how to do things on it.  For my math routine, I had purchased a lovely math calendar that the students loved using and that we always did a pattern on.

I wanted to try to have the same type of calendar that the students were used to put up on the mimio.   I was able to take advantage of creating new date cards so that every month had a pattern on them and I noticed by the time I got to the pattern unit in math, my students were awesome at patterning because we had been doing it every day.  This is what I came up with...

This was my June's calendar.

Below is a more detailed explanation of my math routine with screen shots of my new calendars for next year.

At the beginning of the year, I do the calendar with the students.  But I then go through my class list and everyday we have a calendar teacher who comes up and gets the calendar ready by changing the Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow cards and placing the correct days on the bottom of the calendar.  They pick one of the pointing sticks I have and go through the Days of the Week poem with the class as they point to the actual days of the week on the mimio calendar.  They will then ask the class “What is today’s date?”  and the other students respond as the calendar teacher is pointing to everything on the calendar the kids are saying.  For example, if it is Tuesday, September 14, 2015, then the calendar teacher points to Tuesday, then September, then 14 then 2015.  Then they ask “What was yesterday’s date?” and do the same thing.  Then they ask “What will tomorrow’s date be?” and do the same thing.  The students LOVE being the teacher and love changing the calendar on the mimio.  Then they get the pattern slide ready for the student who is doing the pattern.  I love when the student’s take over this routine.  I really get to see them shine.

The slide that comes right after the calendar is the Days in School slide.

We can do the same thing we did on the other math calendar but now we can print in the number of days we have been in school (or the calendar teacher can do that).

I will do another post later on the Mimio and how it changed my classroom for the better!!!

I have created 2 versions of my calendars: one with Canadian holidays and one with American holidays (which includes the month of August).  I'm so excited I have my calendars done for next year...check that off my to do list!!!
