Center Activities for French Immersion Monthly Calendar Words

Image
As I was creating sight word centers for my classroom, I called up one of the French Immersion Primary teacher’s and asked if she wanted me to create almost the same centers with the calendar words they use.  She said yes and was excited at the prospect of having a few more activities the students could do to learn their monthly words. I had to adjust the activities a little for the french words as most of the words had indefinite articles such as “le, la, un, une”. 1 - d échiffrer le mot In my classroom, I introduce 4 or 3 sight words per week. With each of the French monthly calendar words, I have tried to divide them up so there are either 5 or 4 words per week.  This activity includes: - Posters with sight words on them with fun border - 5 different recording sheets you can choose from - Sheets with the monthly calendar words that students use for reference at the centers (you can double-side and laminate these) (one with pictures & one without picture

More Sight Word Activities

I wanted to create some more sight word activities that my students could do during centers.  Primary students love challenges and trying to unscramble words is a big challenge in primary.  So the first center will be the kids trying to unscramble the sight words. Unscramble the Sight Word: The words are divided up like they are in my Weekly Sight Word package. I have gone through the Dolch words and tried to put them together in a way that would make sense to the kids and helpful at the same time with their reading and writing.  The Pre-primer and Primer list divided evenly into 4 words per week.  The Grade One list I had to make 8 lists with 4 words and 3 lists with 3 words.  The Grade Two list I had to make 10 lists with 4 words and 2 lists with 3 words.   This activity includes: -        Posters with sight words on them with fun borders -        3 recording sheets you can choose from -        Blank recording sheet -        Recording sheet with numbers -

Whole Brain Teaching

I'm working on a few things such as my sub binder and I was writing my little blurb about the systems I use in my classroom and that reminded me I needed to change one of my posters for that system which is Whole Brain Teaching.  I came across Whole Brain Teaching (WBT) last summer and I really liked it.  I picked a few things out of WBT to really master this past year and I will be adding on this year.  If you have not heard about WBT, please visit their site which has loads of information.  Check out the site at  http://www.wholebrainteaching.com/ . I love the rules because they are really simple and there are only 5; however, I do not like the word "rules".  A principal I had a few years back did not like the word either and she always said the rules were really expectations...students were expected to do them.  So I am making my new posters with WBT "rules" on them with the title of expectation instead of rules.  I thought I would share them.  Here are pic

Ultimate Dot Paper Plate Collection

As I said in an earlier post, anyone who teaches grade Primary to Grade Three in Nova Scotia will be executing a new math curriculum.  And one of the big ideas is subitizing which is the ability to recognize at a glance a quantity of objects without counting.  Dot paper plates are always used but I find they take up so much space.  So I wanted to create something that didn't really take up that much space and that I could laminate (which I love doing) so it would last and be protected especially in a primary classroom.  This is just like my new five frame paper plate product but this product has various dot arrangements on a picture of a paper plate.   This product has various dot combinations of the numbers 1 – 5 on a picture of a paper plate which you can print on cardstock and laminate.  I like to print the dot paper plates on both sides of the cardstock to save paper and be more efficient.  I came up with the following dot plate combinatio

Five Frame Comparison Plates

For the 2013-2014 school year, anyone who teaches grade Primary to Grade Three in Nova Scotia will be executing a new math curriculum.  The Manitoba Education, the New Brunswick Department of Education and the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol (WNCP) for Collaboration in Education allowed the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Education to adapt their mathematics curriculum to develop our new guide. So I am in the process of learning the new outcomes and developing new materials that will be useful in my classroom and with this new curriculum. One of the big ideas in the new curriculum is subitizing which is the ability to recognize at a glance a quantity of objects without counting (really not new but there will be more of an emphasis).   Most use paper plates with the dot stickers on them but I wanted to try something different, would last longer and take up less space (because if your classroom is anything like mine there is a lot of stuff).

MUST Have Teacher Forms Updated

As I have mentioned before, I am on a quest to find the perfect system in my classroom and maybe I will find it the year I retire.  But what I do find helpful are my forms that are in my MUST Have Teacher Forms package and I am always trying to add to it and make it one of the most useful tool I have.  So I have been working on new additions to the package and to make it more friendly when you open the zipped file.  I divided files into folders so things hopefully will be easier for you to find (and ME!!).  Here are some new additions to the package: - Behaviour Management Form Examples - Behaviour CD labels (able to edit) *new - Behaviour Check in (able to edit) *new - Behaviour Check in for desks(able to edit) *new - Behaviour Tracking Weekly Example 2 (able to edit) *new - Behaviour Check in for desks 2*new - My Week (able to edit) *new - Student Behaviour Management (able to edit) *new - Student Behaviour (able to edit) *new - Student My Job and Teacher’s Job (
