It Begins with Phonic Mats using Google Slides

Image
I wanted to create a phonics sorting activity that was paperless.  So I created the mat backgrounds that don’t move and then found developmental sequence for speech sounds for early, mid and late emerging speech sounds.  I created the blank slides first and then populated the slides with 4 -6 pictures of each comparing sound.  Each slide compares 2 speech sounds.  I have my students say the picture name out loud and try to hear that first sound and then move that picture under the correct letter. I created this activity to do with my bookbuddies but as I discovered my students wanted to do it outside of the bookbuddies so I would assign a few slides on my Google classroom each tech/center time. You can find this activity in my TPT store at the following link: It Begins with Phonic Mats Enjoy! Kemble :-)

Pre-Primer Sight Word Scrambled PowerPoint & Google Slides

Image
I realize I am slow on the ball when it comes to creating activities that incorporate technology such as powerpoints or google slides in my classroom.  However, when I create activities I take my time and really think how a specific activity would be useful in my classroom.   My students love trying to figure out scrambled sight words so that's what I have chosen to create for my centres this upcoming year but committing to trying to use less paper in my classroom.  I can do this by creating PowerPoints and/or Google slides with the scrambled words for the students to look at and just have recording sheets.   So I have created a new Pre-Primer Sight Word Scrambled PowerPoint & Google slides Activity.   You can find this activity in my TPT store at the following link: Pre-Primer Sight Word Scrambled PowerPoint & Google Slides Activity I will be making the same activities for Primer, Gr. 1 and Gr. 2 Dolch list.  Thos

My Literacy Centers this year

Image
Every year I try to get my literacy centers to be a little more efficient so that the students can really become independent with them.  With the move to a new school and new classroom, I again tried to make the process of centers more efficient.  Now my classroom came with this lovely shelving unit... With plenty of counter space (of course the picture below was from me setting up the classroom). I also had this lovely cart from Michael's that had 6 drawers on one side that would be perfect to hold each groups center booklets (I will post better pictures once I get  back into the classroom mid August).  I labelled each drawer with the Group number and little pictures of the students so they knew it was their drawer. So looking at the counter space I had and the drawers, I realized I could put the drawers out on top of the counter space so the students could easily get their center booklets and start work right away.  This worked out really well.  The kids kne

Literacy Center Activities

I love this time of year in my class because I really start to see things click with my students such as reading longer and writing more and stretching out their words to hear all the sounds.  It is very exciting!!!  And to see pride on their faces makes me smile.  It's just awesome!!  So I have been working on some new literacy centers that will hopefully keep my students growing and excelling.   Center 1: I know Lots of Things That Begin with the Letter… booklet I created this booklet for the kids to think of objects that begin with a certain letter in the alphabet and then draw that object and try to print the word.  Each week could be a different letter.  I have created 2 booklets for the kids.  The first booklet is one page but double-sided which the kids have to think of 9 objects that start with that letter.  The second booklet can be for later on in the year and the kids have to think of 21 objects that begin with that letter. Center 2: Syllable Flip Bo

Santa Phonics Fun

Image
Christmas time is so busy in the classroom and the kids get so distracted at this time of year.  So I knew I had to create some new centers that would align with my outcomes but would be fun for the kids too.  So next week the kids will be doing Santa Phonics Fun during literacy centers.  Here are a few pictures of what is needed: So I have printed out my Santa pictures and grabbed some craft sticks.  I printed out letter labels to put them on the bottom of the craft sticks.  I have also used Velcro to attach the pictures so I can switch the pictures out. I like using the flora foam that you can get at the dollar store but you could also use a container of beans or rice and place the stick down to cover the letter and then decide if the students will be listening for the beginning sound, middle sound or ending sound. This package is available in my TPT store at the following link: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Santa-Phonics-Fun or in my TeachersN
