Primary Flynn

My students love spelling on the magnetic white board with the foam letters.  They know that the blue letters are consonants and the red letters are vowels and the purple “y” can be a consonant or a vowel.  I wanted to create a book buddy spelling activity on the Chromebooks that used letters that looked like our magnetic letters the kids use.  You can find this activity in my TPT store at the following link: Let's Spell: Building Words with Letters Enjoy! I used to dread doing the How to Sequencing writing unit.  It just seemed really hard for the students to grasp.  This year I decided to really focus on creating booklets that would help my students.  I know it’s good for students to draw the pictures but I decided to put the pictures in for them so they could focus on the writing.  And I also did the unit later in the year when my students had more writing experience.  So I came up with these booklets and this was the first time I enjoyed the unit and my students looked forward to the writing that day.  You can find this activity in my TPT store at the following link: How To Sequencing Booklets Enjoy! I love this time of year in my class because I really start to see things click with my students such as reading longer and writing more and stretching out their words to hear all the sounds.  It is very exciting!!!  And to see pride on their faces makes me smile.  It's just awesome!!  So I have been working on some new literacy centers that will hopefully keep my students growing and excelling.   Center 1: I know Lots of Things That Begin with the Letter… booklet I created this booklet for the kids to think of objects that begin with a certain letter in the alphabet and then draw that object and try to print the word.  Each week could be a different letter.  I have created 2 booklets for the kids.  The first booklet is one page but double-sided which the kids have to think of 9 objects that start with that letter.  The second booklet can be for later on in the year and the kids have to think of 21 objects that begin with that letter. I created this memory book for the end of school last year but I have revised and added to this package.  This book can now be started at the beginning of the year and can be worked on monthly to capture what the students are doing.  This memory book will give the students and parents a complete look at the year and what was learned.   This package includes a 85 page memory book that the kids can use to record memories each month and would make a great end of the year keepsake for parents. I have included both a black and white cover page and a colour cover page and have included pages with either Canadian spellings or American spellings. These labels can be printed on cardstock, laminated and then placed on your bins which hold your writing centre materials.  I have included both colour and black and white.  I have also included Canadian and American spellings where needed. I love my writing mini offices and so do my students.  Every year I tweak them so my students can get the most out of them.  Two years ago I added my themed word walls which I laminated and the students are able to change them out any time they want.  I love them!!!  This year I really wanted to add a changeable word wall on each folder but I wasn’t sure how to do this.  I have been experimenting with different things and I have finally come up with something I cannot wait to use in the classroom.  I have taken the dolch word lists (pre-primer, primer, grade one and grade two) and put each word in a little heart.  I printed those out, laminated and cut them and placed Velcro on the back of each little heart.  I glued 3 file folders together and made this my assessment/storage folder for the heart sight words.  When it is time to assess each students sight word recognition, I will use the file folder.   I will call each student up and have them bring their writing mini o

Here are my spacemen that I made to help the students ensure proper spacing between words when writing.  You will need Avery 8196 labels for spaceman. I printed the labels out, stuck them onto a tongue depressor and put clear tape over the label so it would last.
