Class Art Project

Image
The PTG has worked very hard the past 2 years to fund raise for a new playground for our school.  They held an auction each year.  This year they asked each class to do a class art project that they could auction off.  The pieces were amazing.  My class did a large version of Kandinsky circles using yarn.  Here is a picture of the piece not finished... Each student got a square and I drew the circles on in pencil to guide the students.  The students came down and I put the glue on and they put the yarn on.  They got to pick what colours they wanted.  Here is the finished product... Here are some of the other amazing projects the other classrooms did. "Sailing Away" - Groups of children worked on parts of the collage - the sea, the sky, the sails, the boats - and every child cut out their own star. A constellation map is on the back of the piece so you can find your child's star. The piece was signed on the back by the w...

Addition Game with Dominoes

Image
This was a fun activity the kids loved!!  All my students really loved learning how to add and I wanted to come up with a fun activity where they were adding and moving at the same time. A few years ago, I purchased a bunch of foam dominoes from Dollarama.  I put magnetic tape on some of them so I can use them on the board when I teach and the kids can use them during centers or free time.  The kids love using them so I thought they would be great for this addition activity.   Each student gets a foam dominoe and has to find another student.  They put their dominoes together and the student with the higher number goes first.  He/she will have to say the addition sentence and give the answer.  The other student will tell him/her if he/she is correct.   Then they would turn their dominoes to the other side and put those sides together.  Now it is the other student’s turn to say the addition sentence and the answer and the stu...

Summer

Image
I don't know about any of you but I can and cannot believe this is the first post I have done since February!!  I'm new to blogging and I guess I need to make a goal of writing in my blog at least once a week especially during the school year.   The last few months of school were so busy with learning a new math curriculum for the upcoming 2013-2014 school year and other PD sessions and meetings and teaching and packing up the classroom, assessing the students, writing report cards, etc, etc, etc that the blog took a back seat...my apologies.   I had a few late nights near the end in June trying to clean and organize the classroom so it would be easier to pack up at the end of June and unpack in August.  So behind my desk is an awesome book shelf and beside my desk is some cabinets and other shelving and this was just a mess...especially my construction paper and card stock.  I always had trouble getting at the paper and the colours were mixed in together. ...

French Immersion Ordinal Board Games

Image
Again and again my french immersion teacher counterparts in primary are constantly telling me they struggle to find resources they can use in their classroom.  So I am on a mission that if I have created something for my classroom, I will also create it for them to use in their classroom.  So here are my ordinal games but for a french immersion classroom. You can find the French Immersion Ordinal Board Games in my TPT store at the following link:   http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/French-Immersion-Ordinal-Board-Games Enjoy! Kemble :-)

Ordinal Math Games

Image
We finished ordinals in my class a few weeks ago and the kids loved playing these games.  I paired up my students and they had to pick a game board and each pair received 2 dice - one die had ordinal numbers on the sides (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th) and the other die had colours on each side.  I purchased blank dice through our school's book bureau that came with stickers so I was able to print the ordinals on some and colour in the stickers on the some of the other dice.  Taking turns, each player rolled the dice and covered what they could.  For example, if one pair had the game board below and Player 1 rolled a 2nd on one die and orange on the other, Player 1 would be able to cover their 2nd orange rabbit.  The first player to cover all their rabbits wins.  This game can take a little bit as the students start to realize that sometimes the ordinal comes up but not the colour they need and sometimes the colour comes up but not the ordinal they need. ...
