Primary Flynn

Future goal:  add to my blog weekly (I don't want to say daily as I know I can't commit to that one yet). I can try to work on that goal right now as summer is upon me.  It was March the last time I added anything to my blog.  As all teachers know the end of the school year is so busy.  The school that I was teaching in was involved in a boundary review so that was a stressful time as no one really knew what the outcome was going to be.  So I had to decide if I was going to stay at the school that I had worked so hard to get to.  This was the school I went to growing up and it was like home.  I also don't live to far away so I really enjoyed being close to work.  So I decided to take control and make sure I stayed in the area.  I applied to a few schools that were also in the area and I was the top senior teacher at one of the schools so I accepted.  I will be heading to Ecole Rockingham School which is actually closer than Grosvenor W...

So I was finally hit hard with the nasty cold/flu/coughing/feeling terrible thingy for most of March.  It seems to be going now (knock on wood) and the quest to continue to find a great organization system in my classroom continues and to keep my desk organized and the surrounding areas.  So using my new Samsung camera (that I LOVE!!!), I have taken some pictures to show some of my progress. Hi, I wanted to share my Draw and Write books that I have created for my students this year.  I created 3 different booklet options that I could print out throughout the year as they started to write more aka more lines available for them.  I also made the books letter size and legal size.  I start out the year with legal size books and then get them down to letter size near the end of the year.  With the legal size the covers are usually white but with the letter sized book, you could use coloured card stock on the front cover.   Letter sized book options: 1 – Cover, Inside cover, Drawing and Writing page (1 line) 2 – Cover, Inside cover, Drawing and Writing page (2 lines) 3 – Cover, Inside cover, Drawing page, Writing page (3 lines) *all booklets have large and small line options Legal sized book options: 1 – Cover, Inside cover, Drawing and writing page (1 line) 2 – Cover, Inside cover, Drawing page, writing page (2 ...

My students love mental math especially when I have something new for them.  We are doing combinations of 9 right now for mental math we go over lots of different combinations.  I created these flash cards to get their little minds thinking of what's missing.  The picture below shows what one of the flash cards looks like.  The top half is shown to the students first with the bottom half folded behind and once the students give their answers as to what's in the hand that is closed, I unfold the flash card and show the students what is in the hand. I am in awe of those who post every day on their teacher blogs.  I'm on my March Break and today is the first day to actually post something on my blog in a really long time.  I've been sick for most of my March Break which is not fun but at least I can rest when I need to.  Before March Break, my students were working on combining numbers and we had gotten to combinations of 9 and I found they were struggling a bit.  So I thought I would make a concentration game for them and they loved it and I really saw how they had to think about what card they needed to make nine.  For example, if they turned over a 7, they had to stop first and think what card did they need to make 9 and they knew right away that if they turned anything but a 2 over, they did make a match.  It was really neat to watch.  I also had them make a booklet where I provided 2 different pictures - orange bears and pink robots and they had to make combinations of 9 with them. ...

So I have been working on making new Daily 5 I-chart posters this weekend before school starts back tomorrow.  I was also excited to take pictures of them with my new camera!!!  I love using labels so I printed out all the labels that I needed and cut them out then just stuck them on.  As you can see, I did NOT print out enough as I was short one Students label.   I'm taking them to school tomorrow and laminating them so I can use them every year.  I will take pictures of them up in the classroom once I have finished.
