Mental Math and Subitizing

Image
One of the math outcomes I need to cover for my Primary students is: N02 Students will be expected to recognize, at a glance, and name the quantity represented by familiar arrangements of 1 to 5 objects or dots. Performance Indicators N02.01 Look briefly at a given familiar arrangement of 1 to 5 objects or dots and identify the number represented without counting. N02.02 Identify the number represented by a given dot arrangement on a five-frame. This outcome works on subitizing.  Subitizing  is the ability to recognize, at a glance, a quantity of objects, without one-to-one counting. I work on this every day with my students during our mental math work.   I have made dot combination plates on paper that I print out and laminate and I also use PowerPoint presentations.  My students respond in a few ways: with fingers, with number cards I have provided them and/or using a whiteboard to write the number down.  I start off with the low...

YouTube Videos I Use Throughout the School Year

Image
I do love using YouTube videos but I do not like the ads that come with them and the other suggested videos around the video.  Sometimes the suggestions are appropriate and sometimes they are NOT appropriate.  So I use SafeShare.tv to help take those ads off.   First I find the YouTube video I want to show (don't forget to watch any videos before you show them to your students!!!).  Then I copy the share link on the bottom of the YouTube video (Ctrl+C).  I go to SafeShare.tv.   I paste my link and then click on Generate SafeView. This will generate a safe view for me.  I click on the keep it private box and submit. Now I click on download the video. I choose the video format I want ant then download the video to a folder and I now have that video with no ads that I can show in the classroom. Here are a few of the YouTube videos and channels I use throughout the year.   1 - Turtlediary - has amazin...

Apps to Help Keep Me Organized

Image
Here are a few Apps that I love using in the classroom to help keep me organized. 1 -  Google Keep  You can get  Google Keep  on your tablet and on your  computer .  Here is a screen shot from my computer.   All the notes sync up so I can get them anytime I want from any one of my devices. 2 -  S Note for Samsung When I want to take notes at a staff meeting, a parent meeting or notes on a specific student, I use the S Note for Samsung.  Each of my notes are organized for me and I can add to them anytime.   3 - Google Calendar What I love about Google Calendar is that I don't have to have just one calendar, I can have many calendars for different things such as a class calendar, a personal calendar and a school calendar.  I can add tasks to the calendars and events with reminders.  If you are using Google Apps for Education then you can make appointment slots which are perf...

Letter Recognition and Sound Assessment Google Forms

Image
I am all about Google forms!!!  I used to do my letter assessments with paper but once I discovered Google forms, I rethought all my paper assessments within the classroom and once I figured out how to insert images into Google forms (very easy by the way), I created a Google form for my letter assessments and I was blown away at the ease of the assessment process.  I sue a Samsung Tab A with an S-Pen in my classroom and my students thought it was really cool to see the letters on the tablet.  The benefit of using Google forms is that all the data I am collecting on my students goes straight into a Google sheet which allows me to show my data in various ways such as pie charts or bar graphs.  AND it allows me to save on paper!!! I have put these assessments into a package for my TPT store and Teachery shop.  Below give you a little look into the package. I cannot say enough about Google forms and how it has transformed my ass...

End of Unit Assessment for GrPrimary Nova Scotia Math Google Forms

Image
Last summer I became a Google Certified Level 1 Educator and was amazed at all the things I learned about Google Apps and I fell in LOVE with Google Forms and what it could do with my assessment in the classroom.   The past year I started putting my math assessments into Google Forms in order to use less paper but what I realized was that Google Forms allowed me to assess more students in a shorter time which was amazing. The tasks are based on the performance indicators for the Nova Scotia curriculum.  I use a Samsung Tab A in my classroom solely for my GAFE.  I only do school work on this tablet.  The Samsung Tab A has an S-Pen so I can actually write too.  However, a ny tablet that you can access your Google Drive which then you can use the Google Forms to assess your students.   I do advise you to get a stylus for the tablet you are using as the Google Form allows you to write in certain sections.     Here are a few p...
