Center Activities for French Immersion Monthly Calendar Words
As I was creating sight word centers for
my classroom, I called up one of the French Immersion Primary teacher’s and
asked if she wanted me to create almost the same centers with the calendar
words they use. She said yes and was
excited at the prospect of having a few more activities the students could do
to learn their monthly words.
I had to adjust the activities a little
for the french
words as most of the words had indefinite
articles such as “le, la, un, une”.
1 - déchiffrer le mot
In
my classroom, I introduce 4 or 3 sight words per week. With each of the French monthly calendar words, I have tried to divide
them up so there are either 5 or 4 words per week.
This activity includes:
-
Posters with sight words on them with fun border
-
5 different recording sheets you can choose
from
-
Sheets with the
monthly calendar words that students use for reference at the centers
(you can double-side and laminate these) (one with pictures & one without
pictures)
-
Sheets with the
monthly calendar words that
are scrambled (these can be cut and laminated…I have created 3 different types
– one with numbers on them, one with numbers and pictures to help the students
out and one without numbers. The one
without numbers you would be able to number yourself depending on how many
words you want to use in the center.).
Possible ways to run the center:
You
could do this
center every week with five words or every 2 weeks with 10 words. If you do the center every 2 weeks, you would
print off the following cards and double side them:
I
would then instruct my
students to use it as
the words they are looking for. Next I will have the scrambled word cards in
a little bin or baggie that the kids have to use for that centers. Below are 2 examples.
NOTE:
For the words that have indefinite articles such as “le, la, un, une”,
I have put those in the upper left corner which would help guide the students
to what words they are looking for.
The students
would then try to unscramble the words and record the unscrambled words in the
right spot on the recording sheet.
My second activity that I know the kids
will LOVE is the La boîte
magique. This
can be done weekly. This activity
includes:
-A
recording sheet with either 5 or
4 of the monthly calendar words with 2 blank spaces underneath each word
-A
recording sheet with 2 of the monthly calendar words with 4
blank spaces underneath each word
*I have made both recording sheets with
little pictures to help the students recognize the words or without pictures.
Here is
a sheet with five
of the calendar words on it.
And here is a sheet with two of the
calendar words on it.
Students would write each sight word two or four
times (depending on the recording sheet you pick) using a
white crayon. Make sure the students press hard using
the white crayon and take their time making each letter. When they have
finished printing the word, they can get any colour of marker they want and
colour over the word they just printed with the white crayon. As they colour
in the box and over the word, the word should “magically” appear!!
NOTE: Make
sure they press hard when using the white crayon and markers that are dried out
do not work.
