More Sight Word Activities

I wanted to create some more sight word activities that my students could do during centers.  Primary students love challenges and trying to unscramble words is a big challenge in primary.  So the first center will be the kids trying to unscramble the sight words.

Unscramble the Sight Word:
The words are divided up like they are in my Weekly Sight Word package. I have gone through the Dolch words and tried to put them together in a way that would make sense to the kids and helpful at the same time with their reading and writing.  The Pre-primer and Primer list divided evenly into 4 words per week.  The Grade One list I had to make 8 lists with 4 words and 3 lists with 3 words.  The Grade Two list I had to make 10 lists with 4 words and 2 lists with 3 words.

This activity includes:
-        Posters with sight words on them with fun borders
-        3 recording sheets you can choose from
-        Blank recording sheet
-        Recording sheet with numbers
-        Recording sheet with coloured dots
-        Sheets with sight words that students use for reference at the centers (you can double-side and laminate these)
-        Sheets with sight words that are scrambled (these can be cut and laminated…I have created 2 different sheets – one with numbers on them and one with coloured dots…you can choose which ones you want to use and then match the recording sheet to the cards.)

Possible ways to run the center:
You could either do this center every week with four words or every 2 weeks with 8 words.  I will be doing it every 2 weeks with 8 words.  So I will print off the following cards and double side them:

And I will instruct my students to use this as the words they are looking for.  Next I will have the scrambled word cards in a little bin or baggie that the kids have to use for that centers.  Below are 2 examples.

The students would then try to unscramble the words and record the unscrambled words in the right spot on the recording sheet.

If you want to do this center every week, I have included recording sheets with only 4 spots for the words.  I have also included cards with coloured dots that if you don’t want the kids to use the numbered ones, they would then match the coloured dot on the scrambled card to the coloured dot on the recording sheet.

My second center activity that I know the kids will LOVE is the Magic Sight Word Boxes.  This can be done weekly.  This activity includes:
-        A recording sheet with either 4 or 3 sight words but no directions
-        A recording sheet with 2 sight words with directions…with this recording sheet, I would double side it with another sheet that had the other 2 sight words for that week.

Here is a sheet with four sight words on it.

Students would write each sight word three times using a white crayon.  Beside each empty box is a picture of a marker with a colour written in it.  The students would get
that colour and colour in the box revealing the sight word…MAGIC!!!  There wasn’t room on the sheet for the instructions so I would show the students an example so they would know what to do.  IF you want to have the instructions on the sheet, you would use these the sheets that have 2 sight words on them and pick the sight words you were using and double-side the sheet.

There are more blank spaces for the students to practice printing the sight words.

NOTE:  Make sure they press hard when using the white crayon and markers that are dried out do not work.

Below are some more images with some descriptions of the centers.
