Teacher Week 2013 Meet the Teacher

I'm really excited to be linking up to Teacher Week at Blog Hoppin'.  Today is Let's Talk About Me!!!

Well, my name is Kemble Flynn and I have been teaching for the past 14 years.  Deep down I probably knew I wanted to be a teacher but my journey to become one was very different.  My father is an accountant so growing up I always said I wanted to be an accountant too.  So off I went to Acadia University 1st year business and actually took an accounting course and knew this was not for me.  It took me another 2 years to figure out that what I really loved was physical education because I played everything growing up and was on all my junior high sport teams, high school volleyball and badminton team.  Around this time, Acadia offered a new program, Leisure and Sport Management and I transferred over with my business courses.  However, as this degree was almost finishing, I was still a little confused about what I wanted to do.  I remember seeing a poster for the University of Alberta and its MBA program with a major in Leisure and Sport Management.  This intrigued me and pulled at me so I studied for my GMATs and applied and got in.  It was such an amazing program and I had amazing professors but as this program was ending, I was still questioning what I wanted to do or be.  I really missed working with children as I did at Acadia with the S.M.I.L.E program (every university should have this type of program) and the Kinderskills program (working with 3-5 year olds) and thought...EDUCATION.  I applied for the Education program at Mount Saint Vincent and got in!  I knew it was the right choice as I felt right at home and loved being a student teacher.  I had been a professional student for awhile but I knew I had to keep going until I found what I wanted to be when I grew up!

I was very lucky to get a long term teaching job a couple months after I graduated and the rest is history.  Now, if you think me being a professional student stopped, I had one more degree to get but I knew I couldn't teach and then go sit in a classroom so I did an online degree from Memorial University.  It took me 3 years but I received my Masters of Education in Information Technology.  I really loved the online aspect as I am a night owl and it was a perfect choice for me!

I am fairly new to Blogging as I started my blog last year.  I had a hard time coming up with a name but in the end I called my blog Primary Flynn Where learning begins... because I feel the learning really begins with me and the blog can be one area where I can learn and grow.  Learning should never stop...I love learning new things.

1.  I teach at the same school I went to from Grade 3 to 9 (there was a little school across the street that had Grade Primary - 2 but it was torn down years ago...I'm a little sad about this as I would have been teaching Primary in the same classroom that I had been in when I was 5 years old.  That would have been really cool!)

2.  I have the cutest little dog named Ceba.  He is 5 years old.  Here are a few pictures to make you smile!

3.  During the school year, I teach Zumba once a week at school to Grade Primaries - 3s.  They are too cute when they are trying to Zumba!

4.  I took a hula hooping class last year and just fell in love with hula hooping all over again!!  It is so much fun.  I now own 3 hula hoops!

5.  When I was in grade 12, Halifax West High School and J.L. Ilsley High School took a select group of students to The Gambia in West Africa for a week.  I was lucky enough to be one of those students.  It was an experience of a life time!

6.  I recently fell back in love with roller skating too!  I ordered a pair of roller skates last year...white boots just like I had when I was young!!

7.  Being from Halifax, Nova Scotia, I LOVE the water and the ocean...even when it is so cold you can't feel your legs but you know if you keep moving it will get better.

8.  I love my Kindle!!

9.  I love playing all sports especially volleyball!

10.  I am now obsessed with DIY youtube videos on jewelry.  I see something I like and I try to make it.  Here are a few of my projects....

Well, that's a little bit about me! Hop on over to Blog Hoppin' and link your post up!
Check back tomorrow for Day 2: Our classrooms!

Enjoy!

Kemble :-)
