Zero the Hero

I am soooooo excited to be writing this post.  For the past few years I have been celebrating every 10th day in school up until the 100th day.  Sometimes I would use a picture of Zero the Hero that I found off the internet or another teacher and I would use a teddy bear.  I really wanted to try and do something different.  I thought a little video of Zero the Hero talking to the kids about zero and counting with them and he would visit every 10 days.  So I collaborated with my brother to create these videos and the past school year was our testing ground.  AND the kids LOVED Zero the Hero!  I told the kids a little before the 10th day that Zero the Hero would be sending me a little video message for them.  They were so excited to meet Zero the Hero and see what he was all about.  The 10th day came and some of the kids walked in telling me that Zero the Hero was coming today or asking when was Zero the Hero coming today.  I always played the Zero the Hero videos after math calendar.  The kids were so quiet watching the videos and when Zero the Hero asked them to count with him, they actually counted.  Some of the kids waved good-bye when Zero the Hero said good-bye.  A few days before the 20th day the kids would start to talk about Zero the Hero coming on the 20th day and after that video Zero the Hero became a fixture with the kids.  Some asked where he lived and how did he know me.  The videos aren't very long but each video give a little zero fact and gets the kids to count to what day it is.  For example, on the 40th day video Zero the Hero and the kids count up to 40.  Zero the Hero tells the kids that he gave me an activity for them to work on and he flies off until the next 10 days.  I had the activity ready for the kids when the video was finished and told the students that Zero the Hero e-mailed me the activity.  I also made bookmarks for every 10 days so the kids could take those home and by the 100th day have a collection of 10 bookmarks.  Here are 2 screen shots of the video...
