Busy over Christmas Break - Sight Words

I know Christmas break should be all about relaxing but I think any teacher starts to think about the new year and what other activities you will be doing with your students.  My students are really growing in their reading and word recognition so I decided to make a few sight word activities.  

The first one is connect 4 boards .  I took the dolch lists from Kindergarten to Grade 2 and mixed up the words for each game board.  I have tried to teach the kids with my connect 4 boards to take your turns quickly as you say the word quickly so it helps with fluency too.  I double side my boards and laminate. 


The second activity is sight word flip booklets.  The idea is like connect 4 but instead the students roll a die, find that number, say the word and colour in that spot.  The first student to colour their whole card, wins.  I created sheets that have the same words on each grid and sheets that have grids with different words.  You can put the sheets in any order you want.  These are great in literacy centers.




The third activity is the same boards from the sight word flip booklets but enlarged into game boards which you can print and laminate.  The kids would cover the words instead of colouring them in.

The fourth activity is a little booklet the kids can take home to read with their parents on the weekends.  Students can write down the sight words they know on Friday and take the book home and share.  I created a page that allows the parent to sign the booklet and send back so you know your student read with them or the students can just keep the books at home.  Here is a picture of the front and back cover of the booklet.

Hello,  I cannot believe I uploaded my plant journal in 2012!!!  I have been using this plant journal with my students for 12 years!!! Blank Game Boards

Every year, no matter what grade level I am teaching, I end the year with the students making a game they can play at school and then take it home to play with their family.   And every year it seems I am scrambling to put the materials together for the students.   I have found the younger students really need something concrete they can use.   I came up with these pre-made template.   I made templates without spinners, with different types of spinners and with places for cards.   I have all the templates in a binder in clear plastic protectors and I get the students to pick which template they want the day before we do the activity so I can have the templates ready for the kids.   I also have pre-made squares with various game standards such as “Miss a turn” and Go back 2 spaces” the kids can cut out and glue on the squares they want.   There are also blank squares they can print on to customize their game.   I also give the students a template to help with the writing of their direc

Heart Sight Words for Mini Offices

I love my writing mini offices and so do my students.  Every year I tweak them so my students can get the most out of them.  Two years ago I added my themed word walls which I laminated and the students are able to change them out any time they want.  I love them!!!  This year I really wanted to add a changeable word wall on each folder but I wasn’t sure how to do this.  I have been experimenting with different things and I have finally come up with something I cannot wait to use in the classroom.  I have taken the dolch word lists (pre-primer, primer, grade one and grade two) and put each word in a little heart.  I printed those out, laminated and cut them and placed Velcro on the back of each little heart.  I glued 3 file folders together and made this my assessment/storage folder for the heart sight words.  When it is time to assess each students sight word recognition, I will use the file folder.   I will call each student up and have them bring their writing mini o
